Bobby Baker of the Pamlico County Sheriff's Department (file photo) and his fellow law enforcement officers had a hectic Friday night.
Two 19-year-olds were transported to Craven Regional Medical Center Friday night, having ingested illegal drugs after their arrests. The overdoses were detected as the pair were being booked at the Pamlico County jail.
Shortly after, at approximately 8:15 p.m., a 24-year-old woman was found in the jail lobby, apparently suffering similar symptoms. Law enforcement officials believe the incidents are related.
"Their stomachs have all been pumped out," reported investigator Bobby Baker. "They are probably going to be OK, but they'll get hit with even more charges."
Less than an hour later, county deputies responded to a hit-and-run accident on Neuse Road, one-mile west of the Hwy. 306 intersection near Arapahoe. One suspect, apparently driving while intoxicated, fled the scene, reportedly in a vehicle driven by a family member.
Witnesses furnished a description of the suspect and a possible address. Officials hope to make a quick arrest.
The other motorist, a woman, reported chest pains from an airbag that deployed in her Jeep Liberty. "I'm really impressed with that vehicle," said Baker, who along with other officers had a busy night. "It probably saved her life."
