Cook-off organizer Lee Duer congratulates chowder champ Sandie Beal Saturday afternoon.
Twelve tasty chowders, a distinct nip in the air, and a large turnout of ravenous patrons translated into a blockbuster Second Annual Chowder Cook-Off held Saturday on the waterfront of the Oriental Marina Inn.
The event, a fundraiser for the Oriental Woman’s Club, featured a ‘blind’ taste test by three gourmets: Mayor Bill Sage, TV weatherman Skip Waters, and newspaper editor Jeff Aydelette. Attendees also received ballots to select their favorite chowders.
By early afternoon, the pair of completely independent evaluations each reached the same undeniable conclusion: The cuisine of Academy Street resident Sandy Beale reigned supreme for the 2009 Chowder Championship.
Separate fare offered by Cathy McIlhenny and Chef Michael of the Toucan Grill took second place. Chowder A of the Toucan was embraced by the judges, whereas Chowder B of the Toucan found favor with the hungry masses.
Organizers proclaimed the event an unqualified success. The proceeds will go to fund a number of the club’s charitable efforts over the coming year.
